Auckland Council is investing in its own multi-cloud environment.
Auckland Council has revealed its multi-cloud transformation budget and strategy after the conclusion of the project's procurement phase.
The project has a total capital expenditure budget of $10.7 million, head of ICT operations Mike Brothers told Reseller News.
Of that $3.7 million will be spent on servers and storage from HPE and $2.2 million on software from VMware.
Data virtualisation will cost $3 million with $1.4 million going on software from Actifio and a further $1.6 million on hardware from HPE.
Around $500,000 will be spent on Windows server software, the main operating system, which will be augmented by a few Linux servers.
The only other component is application management and performance monitoring software. Council is still looking at its existing Splunk deployment to ensure there is no overlap.
"We are yet to finish that analysis and understand whether we need to go to market," Brothers said.
On top of that is implementation services.
Brothers said Revera, now CCL, was still a partner on the project providing support and the vast majority of the new hardware will be deployed into Spark's data centre in Takanini.
The system will operate in its own private VMware environment to reduce operational and infrastructure costs.
Brother said Council had always been unable to afford two physical data centres so will leverage some public cloud for business continuity.
"We did look at a multi-data centre option in the business case but it came out as very expensive," he said.
The project is now in its pre-migration phase, with the hardware mostly installed. The build was scheduled to start imminently with workloads shifting in mid to late September and project completion expected in late January to mid February next year.
In its latest contracts disclosure, covering 11 months to the end of May, Auckland Council recorded various new deals with Revera, now CCL, including a multi-cloud hardware contract of just over $3 million.
Cloud specialist The Instillery also scored a $3.7 million deal for implementing Actifio cloud management software for backup, hardware and services.
MuleSoft licenses to the value of $934,743 were also purchased. MuleSoft delivers integration software that can span legacy systems, on premise systems and cloud services.
