Housing NZ is scoping a roll-out of sensors out 2,000 homes as part of its smart homes program.
The government corporation already has 160 smart homes across Wellington, Palmerston North and Lower Hutt in a trial that kicked off in March last year and is due to be completed in December.
Each has sensors installed in lounges and bedrooms to measure temperature, carbon dioxide and humidity with some also having them placed in the bathroom and kitchen.
Data from the sensors is transmitted to Housing NZ and stored in a data warehouse.
The corporation is now considering introducing sensors to an additional 2,000 homes across New Zealand and seeking supplier with to provide sensors, installation, on-going maintenance and support, and a platform for data transmission.
"If we proceed, the intent is to have all sensors installed and fully operational by early May 2020," Housing NZ said in a procurement notice.
The data will be used in conjunction with other Housing NZ data and information to support investment decisions, enable organisational learning and to raise tenant awareness on the health of their home.
"We are looking for a long-term partner who shares our passion for ensuring our homes are warm, dry and healthy," the notice said.
Housing NZ manages around 64,000 properties housing more than 184,000 people on behalf of the New Zealand government.
