IBM systems integrator lights up NZ national grid operator Transpower

In a New Zealand first, Certus Solutions implements IBM Maximo HSE Manager at Transpower.

Certus Solutions has announced that New Zealand’s national electricity grid owner and operator, Transpower has gone live with a Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) solution.

According to the IBM systems integrator, the solution was developed to help manage risks and to enable the organisation to adhere to its “Zero Harm” philosophy.

Transporting electricity from where it is generated to cities, towns and some major industrial users 24/7, Transpower is responsible for the towers, poles, lines, cables and substations stretching and connecting the length and breadth of New Zealand.

As part of the deal, Certus Solutions created a HSE solution using Maximo that enhanced its standard pre-configuration to meet the power company’s streamlined reporting requirements to improve its ability to manage corrective actions for incidents.

“Certus helped us understand the functionality available through Maximo HSE and worked closely with us to determine which preconfigured options made the most sense for our business,” says Peter Griffiths, Grid Reliability and Performance Manager, Transpower.

“As a result, we now have a more streamlined approach to HSE management and reporting.”

In a New Zealand first, Certus Solutions implemented IBM Maximo HSE Manager at Transpower, which is aligned with the organisation’s Maximo Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) platform.

The HSE team at Transpower now operates a single application that enables reporting of all incidents including work, personnel, safety, health and environmental areas.

“Certus worked closely with us to customise the platform to deliver us best value,” Griffiths adds.

“As a result, we now have the HSE management and reporting capability we need.”

According to Griffiths, providing a single view of Transpower’s facilities, assets and hazards was a significant challenge as it features a 11,567 kilometre route of high voltage transmission lines, a 61 kilometre route of underground cables, 40 kilometres of submarine HVDC cables, 40,674 supporting towers and poles, 178 substations and 1,051 transformers.

“With its focus on its Zero Harm safety culture, Transpower wanted to simplify its reporting process, so it could obtain relevant information about its equipment, hazards and incidents in a more streamlined and timely manner,” adds Maarten van der Zeyden, Solutions Director, Asset and Industry Portfolio, Certus Solutions.

“The Certus Maximo HSE platform has given Transpower a single channel to log HSE incidents as they occur, so the identification and removal of potential hazards happens as quickly as possible.”
