REANNZ deploys EndaceProbe and EndaceVision

Network and security monitoring for 10Gb Ethernet based network

Emulex Corporation has implemented a network and security solution for the Research and Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ).

The security firm has provided its EndaceProbe intelligent network recorder (INR) and the EndaceVision network visibility software to REANNZ.

REANNZ’s high-speed network connects close to 170 institutions, including universities, Crown Research Institutes, Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics, schools and businesses. It has points of presence (PoPs) throughout New Zealand, the US and Australia. Member organisations use the network to link to other research and education networks to facilitate the creation of disruptive technological innovations.

REANNZ chief executive, Steve Cotter, said the network is designed to capture and share huge international datasets, enabling data intensive, complex research experiments.

“It is critical that our network is highly secure and available 24/7 in order to provide our members with confidence that they can collaborate with their partners in New Zealand and abroad without their data being compromised. We selected the Emulex EndaceProbe INR for its ability to report on network usage within minutes, versus the hours it took previously, enabling us to take proactive security measures and quickly rectify network performance issues.”

REANNZ also deployed the EndaceProbe INR to monitor its Los Angeles and Sydney international circuits. Emulex said this will deliver continuous packet capture and network recording, while providing nanosecond accurate timestamps for every packet.

Emulex Endace division senior vice president, Mike Riley, said a bullet-proof, reliable network is critically important to a research and education network such as REANNZ, as downtime or security breaches could lead to declines in membership or loss of government funding.

“Emulex solutions allow REANNZ to maintain tight network performance monitoring, while reducing packet loss and the time it takes to pinpoint and diagnose bottlenecks or security events on their network, helping ensure member satisfaction and the ability to continue to grow the organisation.”

The firm said REANNZ had already realised a return on investment since deploying the technology with the discovery that its international carrier was not operating the link properly. This reportedly allowed the network provider to recoup thousands of dollars.
